Good morning America and the rest of the world.
If someone is interested to change the evaporator himself, go to
http://www.classic-roadster.de/ verdampertausch.
You must yourself register and then you can download the photo's and
description.
The description is in German. I will make now a translation so you only have
to download the photo's.

Changing the evaporator. told by Andre Wittke , and he show you how to do.

For changing the evaporator there is no special tool or second person
necessary. You need for the steering air-bag and the heater cabinet 2 Torx
screwdrivers.

There is a video on the site, and with this you can see it is easy and
simple to do. Even when you have lost the hope after seeing the pictures.

You must consider that it cost at least 15 ours to do so. I did it in two
day's

What are the first things to do before you start:

a.. Buy new O-washers for the heat convertor in heater cabinet.( Total 3
pieces).
b.. Buy new O-washers for the 2 pipes leading from the Expansions gauge,
to the evaporator ( total 4 pieces).
c.. Download All Videos from the following headlines from
classic-roadster.de.
a.. It is video how to dissemble the midconsole at : Infos &
Dokumentation => Filme & Videos => Demontage => Album:
Mittelkonsole/Mitteltunnel

AND

e-cluster&op=modload&file=index&name=gallery&include=view_album.php
(total of 7 pieces)
d.. You must pull up your car at the right side and loose the cooling
fluid. Place a reservoir under the car to catch the loosen fluid. Underneath
the radiator there is a red plastic screw. You must turn it 2-3 times to let
it come out .
e.. Set the driver seat in the backwards position and set the steering
wheel in the lowest position. Disconnect the battery in the trunk.
f.. Look first at the video's and dissemble the mid console , the
instrument cluster and the dashboard.
g.. Look at the pictures and dissemble the heater cabinet.
h.. Disconnect the 3 aluminum pipes from the heater converter. ( by
assembling use the new O washers!)
i.. Then take away the clips and Torx-Screws from the heater cabinet front
cover , and take away the front cover itself.
j.. Unscrew the evaporator and change it with the new one.
k.. Assemble in the opposite way.

Onderwerp: [R129 SL] MB Air Conditioners Problems

It is a well known that MB air conditioners are poor from a design or
manufacture standpoint in that they prematurely fail prematurely due to
leakage at joints, especially in the evaporator, the heat exchanger inside
the cockpit. Although the part is only a couple of hundred dollars,
installation is a pain (a lot of work in an awkward position) in the W140
and R129 series models because so much work is required to get at them.
Failure often occurs between 5 and 10 years. There are no moving parts in
the evaporator and it is protected from the outside environment but fails
frequently nevertheless. MB acknowledges no responsibility for this part.
Repairs have cost many owners dearly. I speak from experience. Maybe MB
hasn't adequately factored in the materials corrosion requirement of the
R134a refrigerant, versus the now banned R12 (Freon).
