Having gratefully received and digested the advice from list members,
I'm still in a quandry as what to do. Apparently this is a very complex
system that is not easy to analyze or repair. I recently visited my
local M-B dealer, where I am on very good terms with the service
manager. I presented to him my problem (ASR light comes on after a few
minutes of engine run time and then stays on until ignition is switched
off). I explained that I have no transmission problem, and there is no
evidence of rear wheel braking or accelerator pedal malfunction. He
said-"there are many things that can cause this, but expect to pay from
several hundred to more than a thousand dollars to analyze and remedy
it". He suggested that it is probably an electronic device that has
failed- either in the computer or the instrument cluster. Now comes
the crucial question(s)- since I never drive the car in winter, nor has
it ever been in sand, of what value to me is a system that regulates
rear wheel spin? Can anyone on the list advise me of the following:
Can this system be disabled so the light does not glare at me from the
dashboard? I'm thinking of simply removing the bulb from its socket in
the instrument panel. Would this cause any problems with other systems
that may be interconnected? If I continue to drive the car in its
present condition, could I possibly be asking for trouble by damaging
something? I'd like to get into the mind of the engineer who designed
this system and ask what he was thinking by adding so much complexity
for so little meaningful benefit.
