[R129 SL] RE: R129LIST Digest, Vol 21, Issue 1 refrigerant

I had the same on my car:
The reason was that the switch S32 located on the receiver-drier was defect.
There are two switches on the drier; one with a big screw what operate under
2 bar. If the system pressure is lower then 2 bar it switches to mass W9 and
the system is shut down to protect the compressor. The other switch ( R12 =
green R 134 = Yellow ) is small and located on the outlet side of the
drier. This switch is made that when the pressure on the system becomes
higher then 20 bar it switches the W9 mass and let the electric fans runs on
full power to cool the heated gas what is coming off the evaporator inside
and must be cooled by the radiator in front. If that system or switch is not
working the system becomes overheated when the car is not driving and the
pressure become above 20 bar. Then the expansion valve will loose
refrigerant to let drop the pressure to save the system. When that is
happening several times, the refrigerant level will drop to low and the
system will work but with very small capacity. Filling the system will let
it operate for some time till there is again to less level.
Replacement off the switch solves the problem.

Off course you can get the same problem if both or one electrical fan is
defect, or the resistor R15 (what is put in series from )the relai K10 or
K9-1 , wich are activated by the switch S32.

Then be sure to not overfill !!!! Overfill can permanently damaged your
compressor. I had the same with my Mazda 929 when I refill the system. I
could not read the maximum pressure and looked only that there were no
bubble's in the drier. There was no expansion valve! So the compressor
proberly had received fluid R12 instead of gas and heated up so much that at
the end the complete compressor system with magnet clutch burned out. And I
put the complet system into the car myself some 10 years ago. But after this
a learned my lesson and I let the OFFICIAL mercedes benz mechanicshop filled
my 500 SL. It costs with leakage test and the conclusion of a defect S32
109.00 euro. say 140 $.

I know for sure that you cannot buy and replace a compressor for that money.
I do the most of maintenance on my 500 SL myself, I have the DVD with all
the information the dealer has, but i pay for the airco filling !!!!!!!

So If someone can help me to find a compressor for R12 for the Mazda 929 2.0
I coupe 1986 i be happy. Otherwise it will be next year project. Defect is
defect and i connot make it worse, then i go to try to dissamble the
compressor and replace the bearings and rubers etc.

Greetings from the FLYING DUTCHMEN 500SL in a warm Holland ....with airco.
