Probably the door check...Inexpensive part...Not difficult to replace yourself.

When I open the driver's door in my '99 SL, it makes a terrible noise, sort of a loud pop or something. The passenger door does not do this. Are there hinges worn out? It's kind of embarrassing. Anyone have any info?

  Thanks
  Adam

I think you'll find it's the door detente - - a thin, vertical piece just
over 1/2" in width about the center of the door that bridges the body and door.
Reasonably inexpensive to replace (under $100 as I recall) unless it's
important to you to have it painted the same color as the body - - then it get's a
  bit more involved . . . .

It can be a simple matter to check the door hinges. Open each door to the first stop, lift up on the door while open and there should be zero play felt. Any play at all is excessive wear. Wider, heavier doors are more prone to early wear. It appears CQRT has your problem located.

  Happy Motoring,
