[R129 SL] Re: roll bar up and Headlight switch

The manual say's: put your roll bar switch up and hold it for at least a
couple off seconds till you can hear a plopping
Sound coming out of the roll bar cylinder, hidden behind the back cover.
Then you can easily put the switch down and the roll bar will go down.

Read it in de the MB USA DVD manual !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! It works.
Then, what I don't understand is why a lot of people do not read the
correspondence on the homepage from the past.
This problem is handled for different times already the last 3 years.

Headlight switch.

First try if a low current relay will work, because it seems me the
simplest way to do. And if you decide to re-assemble
The switch to clean the contacts, it is still better with a relay.
Also you can try a spray. We use here Kontakt60 spray, what cleans the
contacts . If the contacts are only dirty and not burned it will work
without dissembling.

George -

It looks like your diagnosis is correct. This switch sometimes fails
with age and especially if one uses higher wattage than stock headlight
bulbs. A possible cause is arcing of the contacts switching relatively
high current resulting in high resistance. I had one fail on my 86 300E
at 80 K miles. They are not easy to replace. Perhaps a low current coil
interposing relay can be made to pull-in and could be wired into the
circuit. Perhaps easier than replacement and prolong the life of the
switch.

Hi all, my high beam flashers (when you pull the turn signal lever) no
longer work. I have traced the problem from the high beam lamp itself
back to the fuses. The switch (lever) will make and break contact on my
voltmeter as it should, but will only very dimly light up a test lamp.
That indicates to me that something is no longer able to carry
sufficient current to light the lamps when I pull on the lever. I am
wondering if there is a relay in this circuit or is the switch on the
lever the only thing carrying the current?? More information is
available if someone can help on this problem.

Thanks to you all for making this a great forum

The switch on the lever carrys all of the current to the fuses, so your
turn signal/combination switch is surely the problem. It may be
possible to disassemble it and clean the contacts of the switch instead
of replacing it with a new one.

On start up, right after taking the hard top off, the roll bar shot up -
boom! I couldn't lower it with the dash switch. I used the switch for
the soft top, and that seemed to do the trick. Anyone else have a
problem like that?

On "take off " you somehow got one of the wheels off of the ground.
That
triggered the rollbar. It thought you were going into a roll maneuver
near the
ground.

Read the owners manual. It tells you how to put the rollbar back into
the
normal mode. It is IN THE MANUAL.

Hi I am not sure where it is but there is definitely a relay for the
lights, and that is what I suspect is the problem,

My thanks to both Rolf and to Bob for the advice on this problem. You
have
reinforced my diagnosis and given me two choices for a fix of the
problem.
I like the idea of adding a relay and making the switch into a
non-current
carrying device. (that should have been already done at the factory) As
with
many of these systems, I guess it is never too late to improve on some
of
the original engineering. Once again this forum has proven itself to
me.

Happy motoring,
George Jenner

Not an uncommon problem - - -consult your manual for explanation and
resolution... I was able to press the roll bar switch while pushing down
on the bar
itself -- back to the down position.

A writer on another forum said that he lowered the drivers window a
couple
of times and that act reportedly reset the roll bar . . .

Scares the heck out of ya, doesn't it ?
