Very good point Thor, it seems that the sport package is the way to go. I pick up a 1999 this last June with 23,000 miles Black on Black (very dark charcoal looks black). The gentleman I had purchased it for had got it for his wife and her little dog, the dog passed and she was so despondent she could no longer drive in the vehicle. It sat for close to a year with it just being driven in and out of the garage, around the block. When I came across the car he just had it serviced and was about to trade it in on a newer s500. There were a few things that needed repair but it all fell under the remaining factory warranty. The car is such a pleasure to drive. And yes parts and repairs are not for the weak at heart.

Be sure to get the right color combo. A black on black will bring a stronger resale than other colors. Also look towards the Sport. It will give you a different front bumper and side skirts and also look for the Amg wheels option. This is by far the nicest version that you can buy. But to find a black on black sport with low miles with a warranty will be hard for $32k on ebay. I just purchased a 1997 myself this summer with only 35k miles. This car ran me 35K with a remainder of warranty. I looked at many SL's here in Chicago that were 1999 + for the same price but they all were driven hard and had some damage. Fixing items on a SL is very costly so when I found this 1997 that lived down south in brand new condition I jumped on it! Remember the cost to fix a SL in not a walk in the woods, it is a first class airplane ticket!

Good Luck!

Thor

All years are good. You can pick up 1999+ models with most options for around $32K on Ebay all day long...

Clifton - See new story in "Auto Spy" search on Google. Apparently there is some trouble with the hard top, owners are inquiring about a soft top.
Yours is the first picture I've seen - send it to them, they've only been talking about it!!

P.S.
Can anyone advise me on a SL500? I'm looking for a later model, want to spend a reasonable amount. Are there any particular years to look out for (or avoid)? Any info would be appreciated.

This Car was spotted in London, I thought it looked strange because it had a "soft top" I stopped my car got out and had a closer look and noticed that inside was a R129, but on the outside was the new shape Mercedes, the attention to detail on the exterior was excellent, only the interior and the hard soft top gave it away, I have more photos of this car if any one would like to see the let me know and I will email it to them,

What is It?

Regards

Cliff
