The other day, with the petrol gauge just showing the orange light, I
filled up with about 65 litres with 95 RON. Immediately on restarting,
there was a misfire as if one or more plugs were not sparking. As my
friendly M-B dealer was only 400 yards away, I went in and asked the
head of the workshop if he knew what was happening. He revved the engine
in various ways using the throttle point behind the engine block (500SL)
and asked if I had used 95 RON. I told him 'yes' as this is the fuel
recommended by M-B and he said I should try 98 RON next time as the
engine seemed to be running weak - if he pumped on the way to building
up the revs, it went normally - when he opened the throttle any quicker,
the misfire was present.

I drove away and within a few miles, the engine was back to its old
reliable self and has remained that way for the past 200kms using a
variety of throttle openings.
=20
Was it perhaps some dirt picked up with the tank running a little low?
Does anyone else have a similar experience.

P.S. Next Tuesday, she goes in to have the front struts changed. As they
are ADS struts, it will cost around Euros 1,300 .. ouch
