[R129 SL] 1992 500SL - Malfunctioning top mechanism

Hi guys,
I had a question. I have a 1992 500SL. For the past month I have had
problems with the hard and soft tops. The button used to release/lock
the hard top, and also used to retract/close the soft-top doesn't always
work. It sometimes works and sometimes doesn't. I think it might have
something to do with a sensor or something.
For the past week it has completely stopped working. The top is stuck
open right now, I know how to close it manually, but I just want my top
working again.
Any help would be appreciated. I took it to the dealer, and they said
that they would have to charge me 190 for electrical diagnostics. Is
there anything that I can check? I am pretty mechanically inclined, so
anything you tell me I could probably do.
Also, is this a common problem? or am I just the unlucky one? :-)
