No reason at all to avoid the early models. I personally would't touch
a 6-cylinder SL. At over 4000lbs, it NEEDS the V8. Not to mention, the
722.5 5-speed used in the early 300s were problematic. Get the M119
V8...they are bulletproof motors. The earliest cars were the most
powerful at 326hp from 1990-1992. The LH-Jetronic cars from 1993-1995
have the advantage of being chip-tunable (to a degree) and slightly
improved throttle response due to the electronic injection. I have a
'92 119 engine in my car and it's very reliable and powerful.

Here in Los Angeles one can buy a 300SL with under 80K miles for about
17,500$ to 19,000$. Or a 500SL with the same mileage for about 5,000$
more. Is the performance advantage of the V-8 worth the added cost? And
is the economy of the 6 cylinder worth the lower performance? Also, are
there any years to avoid? I usually avoid the 1st year of any new model,
but this might be an exception. I am referring to the '90 through '94
year cars........ the ones with 3 vents behind the front wheels as
opposed to the latter cars with 2 vents.
