It's a difficult balance - Sunday trading necessitates people who are
willing or often coerced into working on Sunday and taking off a day
during the rest of the week. However, I clearly remember Sundays in
England during the 60s and 70s. Often cloudy weather, nothing open and bad
TV on the box. "Songs of Praise." You could buy a newspaper and a bottle
of milk if you were lucky; museums, librairies and every other vestige of
a civilized world, closed and boarded up for the Lord's day of rest.
Unremitting gloom. It was a relief to find myself in Africa and then The
Middle East. At least it was sunny on Friday.
