[LargeFormat] Newbie alert - ? on using a strobe

A couple of things to try....

double check the asa setting on the flash meter.

set the shutter to X.

And while these shutters will sync at any speed, give it the benefit of
the doubt and set it to 1/50 1/60.

Set the aperture wide open, Remove the ground glass back. ( Yes remove
the back. Several people on this list can certify that I'm certifiable
including Uncle Dick, just trust me).

Unhook the the sync cord.

with one hand hold on the cable release, use the other to adjust the
dark cloth over your head and try to focus your eyes on the rear of
the lens. Trip the shutter.

Depending on what the ambient light is, you'll see something faint or
nothing at all.

Now hook up the flash cord and do it again, just be sure the dark cloth
is keeping out as much light as possible.

You should see something obviously different, if it isn't then there's
  synchronizing problem.

If it is then reassemble the back shoot some film at the metered
aperture, and one wide open.

And another with the metered aperture, but set the shutter to bulb,
turn off ambient lights and fire the flash and shutter manually (open,
FLASH, close) Mark this one as it will determine whether the meter is
off.

See what develops.
