[LargeFormat] Import duty and VAT ON Ebay purchases

I'm in Canada and have purchased many things from the US on eBay.=20
It is standard on import to pay all normal sales tax as if the sale had =
taken place in the country. Normally tax legislation like this is =
written with the purchaser having the obligation to pay the tax.=20

I get hit with Canada's 7% Goods & Services Tax (GST) plus $5 processing =
fee coming across the border. My sour point is with UPS, UPS Ground hits =
me with an extra fee to carry a box across the border.

As a public policy point it is done to protect your domestic economy.

I'm based in the UK, and have just received a sinar
5x4 camera I bought on ebay, the seller being in the
US. The camera cost around =A3400 pounds, I then had to
pay a further =A3100 pounds in VAT and duty, upon
receiving the package, which I'm not very happy about.

Could I please have peoples experiences of importing
equipment, and if it is possible to avoid paying these
fees.

Regards,

Simon.
