A cooler would be a great option.  Cheaper than a Pelican case and you
can get foam padding easily.

If you really want to carry-on your camera, I would recommend Tamrac and
Lowepro backpacks.  You can look for other brands, but I think the best
quality for your money will be Tamrac or Lowepro, and they both make
large cases capable of an 8x10 camera with mounted lens, plus an extra
lens.
