The shortest lens you can use depends entirely on the bellows and the
camera's physical construction -- it varies from model to model.

That said -- many 4x5s have difficulty using 90mm (= 3.5") wide angle
without a recessed lens board or a bag bellows.  With virtually all 4x5s
it's impossible to use a 75mm (= 3") wide angle without a recessed lens
board or a bag bellows (though there *are* a couple...).

In my experience, virtually all 4x5s can use lenses from 110mm (4.5") and
longer without bellows difficulty (well, with long lenses, then you get the
"other" problem!)
