Clive,
    Confession IS good for the soul and I do confess a certain complicity in
the Uncle Dick blackmail attempt.  His responses were, in fact, in response
to my inquiries and concerns about his reading habits.  I did urge him to
read but at a pace that accommodates his advancing years.   As one reaches
his dotage a certain degree of lip fatigue whilst reading is oft
encountered.  I just didn't want the poor old soul to overtax himself!
    As to the doughnut vs LF controversy, all I can add is that it does take
proper nourishment to schlep LF gear any great distance.  I realize that in
the UK the American staff of life is probably not wide-spread.  Please
forgive the poor colonies their quirks and oddities.  After all, I believe
that one of the scissored portions of Weston's "Daybooks" contained his
profession of love for the national breakfast food thus giving us historical
authenticity as well . . .;>)
