Don't work -- have fun!  Bring a small camera for collecting memories, relax
and enjoy your time in Rome.

Lugging heavy camera gear around, worying that it might be stolen, isn't
fun -- and you can't dance or run fast with it.  So you miss a couple of
potentially good shots -- no problem.  Good memories are better than good
pictures.
