It's pretty simple.  The wheel is nothing more than the shadow mask
that produces the numbers, and a small magnet, mounted on a short
shaft.  You can remove the cover, take out the wheel, and put the cover
back without jiggering with any of the mechanism in the drawer.  The number
wheel links to the counter in the drawer via a magnetic field, pretty cunning.

If you remove the screws at the handle end of the grafmatic, you will release
the two captive blocks that keep the drawer from coming out of the shell.

With the drawer out, you can separate the top and bottom halves of the shell.
Once you've done that, you can get at the cover and wheel.

It's not a 30 second job, but neither is it quantum electrodynamics.
