[LargeFormat] LF Lenses on MF Cameras Possible?

Dear Joe,
Medium format cameras of reflex (e..g.big Pentax)or coupled rangefinder type
use only the lenses sold by their manufacturer which fit the bayonet and
have auto iris control.
You might consider a used folding rollfilm 6x9 or 6x7 field camera which
carry LF lenses on original or easily made rectangular flat boards and
having a built- in viewfinder for several focal lengths e.g. a Linhof
Technika 70; alternatively a more modern camera with a flash shoe would take
an optical viewfinder. (Expensive Linhof zoom viewfinders can be found.)
Some cheap Russian optical viewfinders for 35mm can work on a 6x9 format;.
see www.mrcad.co.uk for 35mm 85mm 135mm models which on 69 might cover
80mm,203mm, & 310mm LF lenses. Small Ektars are found in the shorter focal
lengths. and a ReproClaron in 305mm but the latter uses a bigger shutter.
If you want to use the same lenses on a small 69 and a larger 54 camera you
could mount the lenses on the smaller lens board and have an adapter made to
carry the small board on a 5x4 one. You can make an adapter from plywood
but an engineer-made adapter is better. Mr Grimes offers these and hopefully
a subscriber to this list will tell you where to find him. He sold me a
useful tool for undoing lens/shutter flange rings a couple of years back.
Wista, Horseman or the Speed Graphic /Crown Graphic 2x3 might suit. These
fold down small; the lightest/cheapest is the little Speed Graphic but the
most
limited in terms of ability. Ensure a rollfilm back is available.
There is a Linhof 67 Rapid Rollex which evidently slides in most small field
cameras like a 69 darkslide but I haven't seen one yet. I prefer 69 to 67.
None of these cameras do wider than 69.
There is a lot of information on rollfilm Graflex and Linhof on the
net. These use small lens boards (accepting 65mm 90mm f6.8 Schneider
Angulons,105mm f3.5 Xenars and modern 150mm f5.6 Xenars, 127mm and 203mm
Ektars ( the Graphic's bellows won't permit the 203mm) or Polaroid
Rodenstock 127mm Ysarons (all in small shutters) but the
bellows on full stretch are a bit limited. TeleArtons are seen in various
sizes but cost and have limited rise.. My 69 Linhof Technika V requires an
extended front panel for the 305mm R Claron. Ultra wideangle lenses can be
tricky as the bellows bind. I use a 47mm on my 69 Linhof with the front
standard pushed back into the body and the lens on a helical focussing mount
but composition and focussing is done on the ground glass. Hope this helps.
Philip Lambert.
