Part of the thinking that glass isn't just a piece of glass, is that it
SHOULD be the same thickness as the original. "or it won't be in the
same plane and it won't focus properly"

Well the ground side is place toward the camera and 99% of all cameras
I've seen, it's that face that registers the glass. Now you could start
talking about the refraction of the glass having an effect but I say
that amount is negated by the variances in the film holders.

One thing is true with Graphic cameras. Some came with fresnel lens and
some didn't the Fresnel went in first and then the glass. If you take
out the fresnel or replace it with a modern one, it will change the
plane of the ground glass. Also on those cameras that didn't have a
fresnel lens the frame was made thicker to compensate. If you add the
fresnel you will move the ground glass.
