Lastly, if you can't get close and low, go with a longer lens and back
up. (yeah I know more weight and cost)


If he's shooting macro, there's a good chance that he won't have enough
bellows with a longer lens, but the tripod with a 1/4" x 20 tpi bolt stuck
through it is simple and, yes, elegant.  That could even be modified to
simply use a couple two-by-fours crossed like an old Christmas tree stand.
