Thank you for the suggestion.

The software that came with the Microtek ScanMaker 4 is SilverFast - 
which is excellent. The negs are scanned as negs and a positive image 
results.  The setup is easy to change though - a neg could be scanned 
to give a negative image. SilverFast seems to be pretty good at the 
conversion though so I am hoping that it can be used rather than 
having to do additonal post scanning manipulation.

Why do you scan scan your negs as negs?

There is no dust problem with the ScaMaker4 as it has a separate tray 
for film scanning with no glass.  There is a glass plate for scanning 
8x10 film but that is not something I will be using a lot given the 
price of 8x10 film here in the UK.
