The Shepherd magazine will feature Jacob sheep (and two other rare breeds, Navajo-Churro and Karakul) in the magazine's December 2016 issue. The JSBA board of directors has been asked to provide an article and photographs for the feature. Board members Lorraine Nielsen and Bob May volunteered to draft an article that profiles the Jacob breed, its history, and the work of the Jacob Sheep Breeders Association.
Gary Anderson, board president, and Dianne Anderson, JSBA business manager, will assemble a collection of photos to accompany the article on Jacob sheep. Here's where the JSBA membership comes in: We solicit high-resolution images of sheep that the editors may use to illustrate the article and possibly the cover and other inside pages. The magazine will publish photos of individual sheep, flock scenes, and even farm scenes.
Photo submission should include a sentence that the magazine can use as a caption, describing the owner, the photographer, and location where the image was taken. The magazine uses only high-resolution digital images, so please be sure images are saved as JPG at least 300 dpi. The magazine editor also said, "The bigger the better when it comes to photos for the magazine."
Regarding submission and selection of a photo to be used on the cover of the December issue, cover shots must be vertical, with room at the top for the magazine's banner. The cover image is to be of sheep (either close-up of a single sheep or a nice flock scene) and should not include people. Cover shot submission should include a sentence the magazine may use as a caption, describing the breed, the owner, and location where the image was taken.
In addition, the magazine has a page 40 feature called "A View" that consists of up to five or six images on one page that serves to show the beauty of a farm or a specific breed through photography.
(Please note: To meet deadlines, JSBA will be unable to track down missing information requested by the magazine. If a photo submission does not include requested information to be used as caption, the photo will not be used.)
Please submit your photos by e-mail to Gary Anderson (gbanderson at ucdavis.edu<mailto:gbanderson at ucdavis.edu>). If you submit a number of photos, or photos with large file sizes, please consider sending in several messages. Photo submissions must be RECEIVED by November 1, 2016. No exceptions.
Finally, The Shepherd also accepts paid display ads for individual breeders and paid breeder directory listings to be included in the December issue and other future issues if desired. (The magazine is offering a special price for breeder directory listings, 14 months for the price of 12, for ads and payments submitted to the magazine by November 15.) Please contact The Shepherd directly for pricing and other information on ads. Contact information for The Shepherd may be found on the magazine's website.
Please be advised that not all submitted photos will be published; the magazine editor will select photos for publication.
Here's a great opportunity for JSBA members to showcase their sheep, their flock, and their farm. Let's fill the December issue of The Shepherd with photos of Jacob sheep! Let's put a Jacob sheep on the coveted cover page! Get those cameras clicking...
