Dear Jacob-listers = Several listers are acutely aware of the fatal
congenital problem in Jacobs in North America; the G444R commonly referred to as
the Tay-Sachs mutation. The source of the problem here in America can be
traced to the ram Turner 183K; the problem had spread to 15 of 16 flocks
tested, over 150 carriers in about 600 tests, and has spread from East to West
coast.

Two veterinarians in England, Drs. Wessells and Holmes are presenting their
 findings at a meeting in London: "GM2 gangliosidosis (Tay-Sachs disease)
in European Jacob sheep" They describe finding TSD in Jacobs using human
blood and brain tissue analysis. They brought Jacob material to Guys
Hospital (a human hospital) and ran human analytical tests which the sheep blood
and tissue "flunked", At first, they thought the TSD on England came from
North America where it was first reported but now accept that it came from
Great Britain to North America. They too will be looking for a source and
founder which may be years in finding.

The ALBC will be covering the final chapter of the mutation findings,
future testing, the results of the gene therapy protocol and Mark Wessells and
Paul Holmes' findings in an upcoming NEWS letter.
Regards = Fred Horak
