Thanks for the pictures, Linda....a picture is worth a 1000 words.  The word "beard" seems inappropriate - I've always heard it referred to as a "mane", as in a "lion's mane."  Some rams definitely have more of this than others and it's been my experience that this "mane" is usually coarse in texture.
