I tend to carry a stick or take Betsy the Wonderdog along. This is the time of year when I want to hunt mushrooms in the wood lot that the sheep are clearing... 

But I also try to be very careful to choose a path that is not between ram and ewes, and also to not do bent over or feeding tasks with a loose ram around. Either I bring them all in and work them in "my" space (perhaps haltering and tying a ram in the group) or use the dog to cut out the sheep I want and suggest that it isn't a good time to challenge both of us. Or all 3 if I have a helper. I think the nuisance of bringing the group in to handle one sheep is preferable to the nuisance of waiting for bruises and sprains to heal.
