What do I mean by brown? Well...I guess that's the real problem. What I'm
looking for is something that's distinctly brown all the way to the skin.
Something the color of a moorit Icelandic, again, all the way to the skin.
I am not looking for a regular lilac.

I let my moorit (brown) Icelandic ewe run with my lilac ram lamb all winter,
but she's a big girl and he was smallish (being a 2009 model) so he was
never able to quite reach her. She ended up being bred by my yearling lilac
carrier.

I believe that when we talk about lilac and brown we're actually talking
about two different colors controlled by two different loci, so I think that
a regular lilac should only give black lambs with a moorit Icelandic or
Shetland (unless it also carries the brown gene).

Dan,

What do you mean by brown? I usually get brown lilacs, anywhere from taupe
to a chocolate color, but most of mine do tend to fade out with age a bit
and like you said - may not be brown to the skin, especially after their
first shearing. I have one ewe who kept her color pretty well into her
second year, but she's fading now. The sun seems to affect them a lot from
the outside too.

I don't have any lilac lambs this year. My new ram doesn't seem to carry it
and all my lilac ewes have black lambs.

I have seen a redder shade of brown in other breeds, but my lilac Jacobs are
basically a similar shade to most of my moorit Icelandics.

Did you breed your moorit Icelandic ewe to your lilac Jacob ram?

My current Icelandic ram carries moorit, but has never produced anything but
black crosses with lilac Jacobs.

"I'm interested in a BROWN ram. I've heard about brown Jacobs, but I've
never seen one that is distinctly brown all the way to the skin. Anyone
have such a critter that they'd be willing to part with? (I'd even be
interested in seeing pictures if you weren't willing to part with it.) Of
course, then there would be the transportation issue."
