[Jacob-list] horn regrowth on adult ram

We had a ram shear off a horn this summer... Scooped out a large chunk of skull, it actually left a hole like depression!

He was bleeding worse than any ram I have seen. To save his life, we cauterized the base, with a pipe heated up with a torch.. Basically like dehorning a calf.. We burned the entire area to slow the bleeding.

This was in June.

He has since grown 3 inches

This is really very minimal regrowth and I don't expect him to ever have much regrowth. This is the first sheep I've had that sheared off the core along with the horn. My friend had a ram shear off a horn, but she had the vet cauterize the wound, which I assume stopped any possibility of regrowth. I didn't expect to see any horn tissue come back and I'm surprised by it. Even though it's never going to be a pretty lateral again, the horn nubbin looks better than the hole or the scab.

No luck at all ! Our 2 year old Tenspeed lost his lateral when another ram knocked it off over a year ago and so far we haven't noticed anything growing.Speedy is just a little lighter headed !

In September my two year old four horned ram had a lateral knocked loose in a ram fight. The horn was hanging loosely attached amid lots of blood - pretty much sheared off at the head. Awhile back, I had good luck with taping an injured lateral back on an 8 month old ram lamb. Since Belvedere has already passed registration and had proven himself as a sire, I elected to catch him up and remove the horn. This horns was sheared off pretty much at the head. I did not expect it to regrow. It's pretty looked like a scab for the last three months. I caught him up today and there is definite horn material growing - about 1/2" worth. I seriously doubt he'll ever have much of a lateral on that side, but wonder what experience others might have had with horn regrowth on a young adult ram that sheared off a lateral. By sheared off, I mean including the core.
