[Jacob-list] Bummer lamb death

Well it happened. The female was sick this morning & I took her to the vet. Yes to scours. 96 degree temp. The doc said she was septic and asked me about sterilizing her belly button. DUH!!! Stupid, stupid, stupid. I did not.....totally forgot with any of my lambs. So I guess I was lucky I didn't lose more. She died this afternoon. He put her on IV fluids, gave her a couple of shots (one antibiotic for sure) but he didn't give her much of a chance when she went in.

OK, what kind of vacinations should my ewe's be getting? I worm them & give them a tetnus shot when sheering.

The vet also said that the colostrum in the powdered replacement milk would not be strong enough to do much good. I'll definitely milk from my next new mom.

I've still got a 3 week old bummer who's doing fine. Many lessons learned this year.

Thanks again for everyone's help.

Carol

Sorry for your loss. What is the temperature of the lamb? Any scours? Do
you hear raspy breathing? Did the lambs receive enough colostrum (first
milk)? Were the mother ewes properly vaccinated? Need more information on
symptoms. You might want some injectable antibiotics on hand, depending on
symptoms. I always consult a vet if it is something I am not familiar
with, but then I live 20 miles from a vet school and the area is crawling
with vets! Paradise..
