OK I know this is dying down but I feel strongly about this.
I feel that some of these "canned" hunts COULD be directed in such a way that people benefit. I'm not saying that I support them, but I spent some time in Texas where it was practically the only way that you could hunt down there. Suprising to me almost all of the hunters I talked to down there had no idea what BLM land was for and was amazed that you could go out and hunt it like you owened it. Most people down there if they don't hunt on one of these hunting ranches, have to pay like 500-5000 per year to lease the hunting rights to land. So I can see how these hunts only being 1000-ish can be appealing.
I feel that they are like anything else. A business. If you know the people you are dealing with and are ok with their practices then go ahead.
I would also like to point out that Jacobs, and other livestock DO NOT necessarily just come running up to you. If you believe that all jacobs are that way then I invite you over to come help me catch my yearling ewes, who have been running with my cousins goats for the last 6 months! :)
Thanks so much for those of you who responded about PETA being the evil it is. Your comments have put it in words that I would probably have been banned if I'd tried to discuss my feelings on the matter with!
Having said all that. I hope that everyone is lambing easy and well!

A friend suggested I seek some ideas from this list.
It is lambing time and a disturbing time. Four ewes have lambed so
far, with 3 live lambs and 4 stillborn. One single live, one single
stillborn, two twins with one living (smaller) and one dead (larger)
and one of unknown origin, either a triplet or a single from a 5th
ewe. Altogether we have 9 ewes and from the looks of it, more lambs
coming.
I have read online about a variety of bacteria that kill the fetus
and depending on 'when' during the pregnancy the ewe is infected,
that determines whether it results in reabsorption of the fetus,
abortion, or still birth.
Aside from all coming out intact and healthy looking (albeit lifeless
and even non-responsive to CPR attempts on my part), they are large
lambs. The largest weighed 8 lbs which I think is big for Jacobs (the
other two I weighed were 7 and 7.5 lbs, didn't weigh the first
stillborn and haven't weighed any of the live ones). Our ewes aren't
particularly big from my estimate. And the surviving lambs from the
twins born were considerably smaller.
Our flock has pretty much had the same feed and water over the years.
Some of the hay this year was from some different fields but still
all local. I suppose the main change is that we sold our small herd
of Dexters cow who had shared grazing, hay, water, and shelter with
the Jacobs. And we sold our ram a few weeks ago.
I would appreciate hearing the thoughts of some of you folks with
more experience than I. I am grateful for the nicely marked cute
little lively ewe lambs we have, and with more ewes due to pop, I am
hoping for more live births. We have not had a problem like this
before and my husband has had Jacobs for more than twenty years.

Peggy- Just so you understand- I would never call you or anyone else a bleeding heart activist. You are entitled to your opinion just as everyone else is. We may disagree (and I may think you are wrong ) but it's still your right to have an opinion.
Maybe in NJ you don't hear much about PETA, but here in the Heartland, we sure do and have been impacted by them. PETA's stated goal is the outright ban on any and all animal ownership or use by people. If they have their way, none of us will have Jacob Sheep or any other breeds, pets or animals. They do not want to see any human involvement in the custodianship or preservation of species. "Let them live free" is a good way to look at their view. I don't know about anyone else, but I can guarantee that none of my sheep will survive out in the wild for very long. Supporters of PETA have been known to turn loose animals in the "best interest" of animals.
While they claim no ties to the ALF or ELF, if you look at their statements regarding domestic animal production, they will do everything in their power to end livestock production. I for one would rather be a good steward of the earth and animals.
I just had a similar arguement this morning with my 14 year old DD. She kept arguing that my opinion was wrong- it may be different than hers, but it can never be wrong. It's MY opinion; I own it; I believe it.

I did not know that PETA is a four letter word. Honestly, I didn't know that they are domestic terrorist group. We don?t ever hear about PETA here in NJ. We have some very good rescue groups and ASPCA that
takes care of all the animal problems.
As I stated before if this is what you all do then so be it. I personally don't care for this type of hunt and wanted it removed from Ebay. If you read the description of the auction I don't believe it benefits us to have this listing. I will do what I think is right for me and that will be the end. I am sorry I even brought the subject up because it put a whole new light on the breeding of Jacobs for me. I can't see me advertising "Trophy Rams for Sale".
And yes, you can call me a bleeding heart activist any time.
Peggy
