[Jacob-list] modified feeder instructions

To Lynette Frick: I'm a first timer and would very much like your
modified plans for your feeder. Our current home-made feeders can handle
two Jacobs and there is lots of waste. Thank you, Kimberly Mick
(mickks at hiram.edu)

I honestly wouldn't recommend it. They could get their heads stuck in
the
holes, or at the least rip off horns. We finally found instructions for
a
feeder that works for us, although we have since modified it with a 24
in
piece of plywood screwed to the inside of the 1"x2" bars about 12" up.

Neither my mom nor I, are carpenters so it took us about 5 hours our
first
try. Now on our 4th we can finish them in about an hour and a half. We
figure it cost us about $35 to build one, and each feeds about 8 ewes.
So
far, knock on wood, we have had no issues with them, and with the
plywood on
the inside, have enjoyed exceptionally clean fleeces and less waste. If
anyone is interested we can email the modified plans.

I think I heard about a yahoo group or message board where people can
post
needs for livestock transport or trips they plan where livestock
transport is available. If anyone knows about this site, can you please

send me a link or other information. Thanks much,

I used to host a yahoo group called SheepTransport but that was a long
time ago. There's another group for finding transport for rescued farm
animals on yahoo -southeastfarmanimalrescue Those are the only ones I
know about, but if you find out about another, please post here as I'm
interested, too.

I would worry they would get their horns stuck in the hole. I think it

might work if the holes were smaller, or you put 4x4 or 6x6 fencing
inside to
limit their noses to getting in. We built 2 feeders similar to the
horned
feeders Premier has plans for. Only thing we would do differently next
time would
be to raise the front legs about 3-4" so the feeder would tip back and
not
get pulled over as easily.
