Chris asked: Where are good tanners, or is it a simple enough procedure that one can undertake it with minimal headaches?

I have used the following tanners with good luck. The products end up looking different. I have Bucks do about 2-3 dozen over the last few years. I have had 2 batches from Sterns with 6 in the first and 2 adults and a few baby lambs in the 2nd. The 2 adults in the last batch were shorn 2 months before butchering, so their wool is very even and short and soft. I'm considering making a vest out of one of them, but have never worked with leather (any hints???)

Bucks lambskins have a yellowish leather when you have them tanned "washable". I have washed one and it turned out OK. Stern's leather is white and very soft. The skins seem stretched a little more so they seem bigger. The wool also has a different look, although maybe it was those individual pelts. They looked more even, so I don't know if it was because of they way they brush or comb the wool or if it was just those lambs being a younger group. Stern's says the skins are washable, but I haven't experimented with one yet.

My high school daughter has 3 cow hides hanging in the barn right now and we just ordered the tanning supplies for those. I'll be interested to see how she does with them.

Any feedback from anyone else?
