Christopher,
I also use Breeders Assistant. I have nothing else to compare it to but it serves all my needs. I am not a very savy person when it come to computer technology. If I can use it, anyone can. I must admit I do occasionally call on Katrina or Linda to bail me out. :-)

I just started using BA this summer - got it mainly because I wanted to reduce the level of inbreeding - somehow I bought 2 Jacobs (from 2 sources) that were 25% and 12% inbred. As it is I will still have 2 with 7.? % inbreeding this year until I get a really foreign ram or trade away those ewes. I have not started to use the accounting or forms features yet - but did print out some nice pedigrees with pictures to put in my book that went with the sheep to the fairs and exhibits this summer.

I am also using the program for my lamas, now that I have a choice of 2 males in my herd. If anyone is interested in guard lamas, there is an article I wrote in the October issue of ILReport (online at www.lamaregistry.com) about a coyote incident here.

I don't think you can beat Breeders Assistant. http://www.tenset.co.uk/
If you are only interested in pedigrees, you can go with Pedigree Assistant for $79. I think I was the first Jacob breeder to have BA and I bought it before PA was available and have to say I find the extra features worth the additional $40. You can download trial programs and see if it works for you. I have not yet found a drawback to BA. The program will create fully customizable pedigrees (including picture pedigrees), keep accounting records, vet and vaccination records (including reminders that it's time for the second cdt shot), create html pedigrees to upload or share via email, contact records, calculate inbreeding coefficients, keep breeding records, automatically fill in your registration applications, there are numerous user fields which allow you to add information to suit your needs and there is an incredibly helpful list on yahoo if you have any problems. (PS - I finally had time today to work on changing my database to accommodate the new JSBA form - I haven't forgotten - just been busy)

At the time I purchased it, I was really only interested in being able to keep track of pedigrees. I wasn't very interested in any of the other features. When I went looking for a good accounting program and didn't find one, I gave the accounting part of BA a try. For my needs, it's been great. If I want to check out where I'm getting the best price for a bag of corn, I sort by description and see just what I've paid for corn and where.

There are number of JSBA members that use BA. I've only just learned that I can send a pedigree from my database for direct import to another breeder that has BA, which is a handy feature. You can also import/export in CSV for integrating to another program.

Gosh, do you think I like the program?
