[Jacob-list] Gaurd Animals

I too have some female lama guards. One just turned 2 - but last spring she was in the barn while lambing was going on and after; and several times I found her cushed with lambs climbing all over her, I did not see this behavior from her sister in a pasture at the same time (no lambs there tho). I also have a cute picture of my big gelding bending down to sniff a lamb's nose. The lamas work really well with sheep but I have not tried to move sheep using lamas like one might with dogs. I tend to move the sheep one or two at a time. It pays to halter train them if you have to move from summer pasture to a barn or across a path between some been fields, as I do. Two of my sheep got to be in a parade at the Blueberry Festival in nearby Lexington OH and they followed their lamas just like out of a movie. I did have to get some friends to lead the lamas, so I could handle the sheep as my animals aren't so well trained that I can do any more than 2 at a time.

Judy and I bought a weaned female llama and brought her home and put her right in with one of our Jacob flocks. That was two years ago. She is the greatest guard animal I have ever seen. She sniffs each baby as soon as it is born and makes sure nothing bothers her flock. If she thinks something is a threat she will round up her flock and move them away from the threat and is constantly on watch. We just love her.
I have been told a castrated male llama makes a good guard also, but you don't want to use an intact male.
With grown llamas I would recommend putting one in a pen next to the flock for awhile so they can get used to each other thru the fence before turning him or her in with the flock, especially if the llama hasn't been used as guard animals in the past.

I know many of the folks on this list ustilze GP as defenders of their flock. Recently, I was asked about taking on a couple of llamas that are not of show quality, but with great dispositons and not good breeder material. Has anyone used llamas and what are the drawbacks and advantages of llamas with Jacobs?
