Donkeys require introduction, training, and common sense to function as guard animals.  Individual personalities vary.  
I imagine it's much the same with dogs.  A neighbor had to keep her LGD tied up during breeding season for her goats,
as the dog refused to let the goat approach the does.  Donkeys do have one big advantage (to my way of thinking) - they
are much easier to keep in the fence.  Seems to me that by the time you have a fence that will keep an LGD in, it's
tough enough to keep predators out!  Donkeys are certainly louder, but not as constant in their noise making as LGDs.

Got to admit that I'm sold on donkeys as guard animals.  Besides, there's something about sitting down in the evening
and sharing a cold beer with Strider that's so satisfying :-)
