I agree--There is nothing dumb about sheep....it's just that humans are
narrow-minded. Sheep don't think like we do, therefore they are dumb. I'm
always amazed at the stunts my Jacobs come up with. In order to get from
one pasture to another they had to pass by the territory ruled by the geese,
who would drive them away with flapping wings and many hissing insults while
plucking wool from the nearest sheep hiney. Some of the ewes and their
lambs finally decided that they'd just stay in the "safe" pasture but I saw
a couple of adventurous ones learn to trick the geese. One ewe would lead
her lambs to the edge of the goose zone, and stop just inside the boundary
while the lambs bounced around her. Another ewe or two, with their lambs,
were standing a little distance off at an angle away from the first ewe.
The geese would head for the intruder, who would wait until the last minute
to dash off to one side with her lambs, and the geese would follow her
triumphantly. while the geese followed the decoy, the other ewes would
quickly trot through the gate and down the lane to the "greener pasture".
When they were safely through, the decoy ewe would run in a big loop back to
the gate and through, while the geese were still congratulating themselves
and strolling leisurely back to guard their property. I thought this was a
fluke until I saw it repeated on subsequent days. Dumb? I don't think so!
