Katrina,
I think the height of fence depends on what kind of
predators you have in the area. Here in N. California
we are losing many sheep and goats to coyotes and mt.
lions. We usually live near parks and open spaces and
with the density of housing increasing in these areas
the habitat gets smaller and smaller. At night we
feed(orchard grass) in smaller pastures to get the
sheep to come in and the fencing is sections from dog
runs which is 1x2 welded wire over 6ft high. So when
we hear the packs of coyotes howling very close we
still sleep soundly. Being in the country we also get
people dumping dogs. I used to train dogs in
obedience and the height they have dogs jump easily is
one and a half times their height at the shoulders.
If they are hungry they can easily jump
higher...remember the training you have seen for
german shepherds for army work? Since you have lots
of property along a road this should be a
consideration too. We have tons of deer in the area
and we like to keep them from eating the grass we put
out for the sheep at night so the height is good for
that too...deer carry lots of things sheep can get.
Glad you are liking your new place. There is
always a silver lining to most crises if we give
ourselves over to the change....though I resist
changes along with the best of them. Victoria
