AND< coarse does not mean scratchy.  There is fine scratchy wool and soft coarse wool.  Coarse, I think, lends itself to wanting to spin bulky yarn and using big needles, not necessarily to just outerwear and rugs.  I've seen some pretty nasty fine fleece, which scratched and poked and was stiff and unpliable.  And some absolutely beautiful coarse wool.  

I like the idea of talking about versatility instead of implying that just because something is thicker than something else, it's nasty and of lesser quality.
