Sue, when I first got into the Scrapie program, I tattooed my Jacobs with their Scrapie numbers. Because the ears were small and usually black it did not work well -the numbers did not fit and couldn't be read on the black skin. Also, it seemed to be quite painful to the animal. We then tattooed on the inside of the flank where there is no wool. The good news was that the animals never flinched at all telling me it did not hurt them. The less good news was that as the animal grew the number became "stretched" and difficult or impossible to read. Not to mention everytime we needed to verify an animal we had to catch it, flip it over, often wash off the tattooed area, etc. So back to ear tagging I went.

We have not tagged our jacob sheep because we haven't been breeding them. We only have 5. I was wondering if you could tatoo them like you do rabbits instead of tags?
