<<<...the information from Debbie Bennett was interesting and I
would like to reply;
Debbie - many thanks for your Jacob lambing information. You say your
first lambs have always been born in the first week of February, which
would indicate that the ewes were fertilised in the last week of
September (at which time daylight hours are marginally less than 12).
The ram seems to catch the ewes on their first or second cycle when put
in during late September.
The ewe lamb breeding information is of interest too - research has
shown that in various breeds, ewe lambs do not achieve puberty unless
are fairly large(for several breeds this means they must get to about
80% of the mean adult weight) but they need to achieve this not too late
in the season. Those which are smaller than this weight will have a
delayed puberty and not breed until their second potential breeding
season. Ewe lambs which do achieve the required weight in time typically
come into oestrous 1 or 2 cycles later than the mature ewes and tend
therefore to lamb 3 or 6 weeks later than the ewes.
Many thanks for your information - David >>>
