As everyone is discussing feeding practices, I thought I would take the
opportunity to complain a bit. I love my sheep, love to care for them,
love to watch them.......I absolutely adore the breed...........but I
HATE the way they waste hay. We call the guy at the auction, he buy's
the hay, we pay for the hay, we offload the hay, we stack it in the
barn, we haul the hay to the sheep......... AND they waste the
hay...........and we have to handle the hay again as we fork the now
poopy, wet, composting hay into the front end loader and haul it one more
time to a large compost pile in our garden.........this really ticks me
off!!! Just think.....the farmer bales the hay and manually stacks it
in his barn, he again handles it to load his trailer for auction, it gets
handled again to be offloaded at my place, handled again to feed the
sheep, and handled AGAIN to head to the compost pile -- five times the
hay touches human hands and still isn't eaten by my animals!!! Not only
are the sheep wasting the hay, we humans are wasting ourselves!!!
Whew, it felt good to get that off my chest!!!

P.S. Yes, we have tried various kinds of feeders and have decided that
large tubs on the ground work the best for clean fleeces (and we are
small, don't have large numbers of sheep). Yes, we have tried various
kinds of hay, but they still wasted it. Yes, we tried feeding less, but
they still wasted it........and then in addition to wasting it they also
yelled their displeasure at being hungry.
