[Jacob-list] question for those experienced breeders

Barbara,

Jacob sheep can be anything from frightened of humans (when their
shepherds have put them out in a field and left them to grow out for
slaughter and to be yard or field ornaments only) to downright
bothersome in their friendliness to you (if their shepherd has spoiled
them unmercifully with feeding, pampering, and spending time with them).

A good shepherd is one who knows his/her sheep. If you know your sheep
(just like children), you can tell when something is not right with them
and catch a problem usually long before the sheep gets sick and down or
winds up dead without known cause. You will often catch a change and
issue before a vet would notice anything out of the "normal" range.

Sometimes people have sheep that really would be better off without
them. My OPINION is that sheep and their people are much like dogs and
their people-----they tend to resemble each other. This is about as
honest as I know how to be.

Hi all.

I am thinking about getting Jacob next year, and so have been trying to
find as much information about the breed as possible. I recently ran
into this guy who said he at one time that he had Jacob sheep. He
claimed he did not like them and he called them "neurotic." A neurotic
animal doesn't sound like something that I would like to have. What
kinds of dispositions, or temperaments are you finding on your sheep.
Please be honest. Barbara
