Jacob list,

All the old time farmers will probably laugh at me, but I thought I
would share this for any newbies. I am getting ready to clear forest for
pasture. The soil is clay and the trees rob the soil of nutirents. The
soil conservation agent suggested I plant millet in the summer as it is
fast growing, germinates in the summer, is hardy and acts like a grain /
forage for the sheep. It is an annual so when the fescue gets planted in
the fall it will most likely take over the field.

I knew about rye for the winter, but this was new for me, millet in the
summer. It was cheap enough too, $0.65 / lb, I got 1 50lb bag for a
little over $30. I spread it in the stump forest where the fescue and
rye just laughed at me as if to say, you expect me to grow here ... and
along the edge of the septic field where nothing grows. There is a link
at the top for anyone looking for more information. I will repost for
anyone interested and I would love to hear comments from anyone who has
used it previously ...

(Note: some people consider it a weed ...)

Gary
