Thanks Joan. "Base narrow" or "close behind" are good. In 4-H judging we were taught that the opposite of "wide" was"bad". I don't really care what we call it as long as we know that there is a deservedly negative connotation to "cow-hocked" and that, modern or primitive, well designed animals do not toe out.
Clarification: My point about the Hescock line ram was that he represented an "alternate" primitive type [and he did look close behind when viewed from the rear]. Years of hard experience have taught me to pay more attention to the rear end than the front end.Dairy bulls carry as much as 70% of their weight on their front legs. Draft animals actually "pull" with their front legs. Beef/meat types are bred to have large rears because, like turkey breasts, these muscles are tender because they don't do as much.
