Yes, it certainly makes a difference where you live. Sheep are a rare sight
up here. The next nearest Jacob flock to me is almost an hour's drive, and
even "regular" sheep are such a surprise that out driving people comment on
them. There is also a general shortage of vets. There's no way one of our
local vets would make a call for an eye infection. Our shearer drives an
hour to us.
Zoe is the same this morning, we're putting everything into her that has
been suggested to us, she is drinking OK, but still only just nibbling
unenthusiastically at hay. I gave her a huge hug to check for bloat again
and at least she's not bloated. This is no longer an acute problem!

Subject: [Jacob-list] vets
I have been seeing more and more comments on both sheep and goat lists about
not being able to get a vet to make a farm call, or unwilling to treat sheep
and goats, etc. Now Melanie's comment about the vets apparently "having
something better to do" than to come and diagnose her animal. What is
going on out there?!!
Don't these vets know that money from sheep ranchers spends just as well as
money from cattle and horse ranchers? That our animals need medical care
just as much as any? I guess I didn't realize how fortunate I am in this
respect. Have never yet had to make an emergency call (thank God) but even
for things as "minor" as an eye infection I have never had to wait more
than 3 hours for the vet to appear on my doorstep, and the vet who treated
my sheep for the eye infection actually stopped in on his way back from
another call several days later to see how my animals were doing, as a
courtesy. Guess I had better start baking him cookies or something!!
