For those of you who might be interested, here is an email I received about a group trying to mobilize young school children to write to children in the UK who are watching their flocks go up in smoke, AND trying to organize an airlift of healthy animals to the UK when this is all over. Here is the info:
Operation SMILE; Children Care
As you probably know, children are often the ones to suffer most in times of tragedy as they must witness but are helpless to act, to help. While on a 2 week business trip to Europe in early March, 24 hr. news of the slaughtering of herds also included coverage of dazed school children in small villages, leading their classmates in prayer. Alarmed older children interviewed described fathers who were silent and depressed, sick with worry. It broke my heart.
Thus, the idea of a children's campaign was born; children to children. Cards and letters, particularly for little primary and secondary children; internet contact for older kids. The little ones would seem to be helped most by something on their school walls as a show of support from their little counterparts here. Lifelong friendships may be made.
It can be a wonderful lesson about humanity and caring for all, I believe, and offer UK children some support and positive distraction where many parents are consumed by the situation at hand.
I am obtaining mailing lists for schools and passing them on to those interested in this project; older kids can research schools with internet, on the internet, as a project.
Caring Across Borders; Cattle Call for Compassion
I've also been organizing donations of baby animals, embryos and "straws" for when the recovery period begins. This has included all breeds of cattle, sheep and now goats.....
Caring Across Borders; "Flying Ark"
I'm organizing free transport of the above through major air carrier associations.
Thank you so much for your message, anything you can do to help would be wonderful. Please also let me know where you are located so that, if another contact comes from your areas I could put y'all in touch.
Warm regards,
