Hi, Charlie,
I was answering Mike Eisenstadt's reply. Actually the guy who wrote the
book is a genius. He spent ten years as a researcher, and uncovered some
extremely interesting new science about the microbiome. Seems there are
more cells in our digestive system than in our entire body. Wow! Who knew?
When we eat fiber we are nourishing the microbiome which makes many of the
enzymes we need to digest our food. Not feeding the microbiome has serious
consequences with damaging bacteria getting the upper hand and killing off
the ones we need and depend on to monitor our metabolism and, get this,
communicate with our brain!
I have a personal story about going in for a colonoscopy and asking about
pro-biotics during the set up to the procedure. The doctor's rude
Physicians' Assistant snapped at me, "We don't do experimental." Well,
bully, bully, I've got your number, babe, Zero!
I have to listen to the interview a few more times to fully wrap my mind
around the phenomenon of feeding the microbiome and fecal implants. I am
thoroughly impressed with this young MD.
Best,
Frances
