I ate C Rations when I was in the US Army in 1957. They were left over
from WW II. Spam in a can. Fruit in syrup in a can. abreviated pack of
Lucky Strike cigarettes. There must have been other items but don't
remember.
On a related subject, I didn't think I was in the Army long enough to
qualify as a veteran. There is some doubt in my mind about this because
a friend of mine who served the same year and in the same Reserves>Army
6 month program has been enjoying VA privileges all his life. So I have
applied for a DD411 report from archives.gov as to whether I am or am
not a military veteran. In the past I had learnt that a soldier was
required to serve 180 days to be a veteran after discharge which is why
6 monthers were discharged a week or so before serving 180 days. This
may have changed. Who knows how the gov of today treats superannuated
survivors of that 6 month program? The 6 month join the Reserves program
+ 6 months in the Army program allowed you to avoid the 2 year draft
which still obtained although 1957 was quintessentially peacetimre. Very
popular program for that reason. ER12533294 was my serial number. Funny
how that number sticks in the mind.
