we grieved when Luis Jimenez was killed a few years ago in an
accident while working on a sculpture in his studio commissioned
by the new Denver airport.
i just found a picture of the sculpture itself - astounding!
there were issues about the sculpture between Luis and the
airport, we did hear that.
ya know, Luis was blind in one eye which makes me wonder
if the accident may have occurred because he lacked
stereoptic vision
we knew him in Austin, then in New York city where he worked
outdoors in the backyard of an apt he and his wife had, I think
on Canal Street. and then in later years, he'd visit with us when
he came through Austin. 1 time he knocked on our door when
we lived in that bungalow at the end of West 9th off West Lynn.
i went outside and across the street was parked hispickup truck
and trailer carrying a huge polychrome fiberglass sculpture
destined for a park in Houston. he was delivering it from his
studio in New Mexico. i think it was his famous dying Indian
warrior - in garish polychrome fiberglass. that he chose
to go out of his way to drive it to our house was very touching.
