I'm not sure how many Chuck Wagonites will remember
Christian Smith. For me he was the last of the WW II
GI Bill graduate students.

He led a complicated life: 2 or 3 wives, children,
played the flute, a lover of good books, studied
foreign languages, interesting guy. Taught beginning
Latin at Austin Community College for many years.

he died last week of pneumonia in his early 80s,
survived by his partner Henriette Jacobsen, daughter
Adrian and son Jeremy.

He had visited Ezra Pound in St. Elizabeth's
hospital for the insane, near Washington DC
way back and, at his death, still had a trove of
letters to him from Ezra Pound which, if they
can be found, will be donated to the Harry Ransom
collection.
