analysis of the charm of Kim's notion: Watkins & other 19th century
landscape photographers often put a gent in a stovepipe hat sitting
on top of a crag into their landscape photos to provide scale perhaps
and also surely to mitigate the alienation/discomfort they felt confronting
raw nature. kim, a true post-modernist, disrobes in order to simulate
an unprotected and therefore a true confrontation with the dangerous
and unknown. i say 'simulate' because i suspect a collaborator
at the camera in order to frame the shot accurately rather than her
all alone using the camera's self-timer.
